My fav 3 Indochine outlets are this one (ambience), the one at Club St (food), and the one at Wisma Atria (convenience).

This place is really pretty place at night, all lighted up. Romantic ambience, but as with all things in life, it doesn't come for free. You pay a pretty high premium for it, in fact. $25 for a plate of pad thai, $18 for a platter of Vietnamese net spring rolls, $22 for a dish of vegetables stir fried with mushrooms/seafood. And it was barely enough for 2! But all in all, no one comes to Indochine expecting a cheap meal...you come knowing you'll be paying for the consistenly above average food, nice ambience, and excellent service. Only for occasions, I suppose.

Holland Village XO Fish Head Beehoon

Late dinner at 930pm and business was really good. Thankfully, though, the wait wasn't too long. Service was, as always, cordial at best, but like all Singaporeans, we sucked it up for the above average food.

I love san lou hor fun (sliced fish with thick kway teow, tossed in superior light soy sauce, sesame oil and idunnowhatelse), and their version always hits the spot cuz its heavyhanded on the light soy sauce. I love savoury food ;)

We also got a har cheong gai to share. The chicken was well coated with prawn paste, but I still prefer the version at the Alexandra Village branch of HK Street Chun Kee.

This was L's fish head bee hoon with XO- its supposedly tastier than the fish meat version (see below), cuz the bones 'impart' more flavour to the soup, but i'm usually just too lazy to have to suck and remove all the bones...:S

This is my Fish meat beehoon without XO. I wanted to see if it would be as tasty without the XO. The verdict? There is a pretty discernible difference between the XO and sans-XO versions. I personally prefer the former because its as savoury and tasty, and besides, the XO taste can get abit too strong sometimes.

I always say its a good sign when the hawker eats his own food at mealtimes. The famous owner of the stall was happily tucking into a big bowl of fish head beehoon at 1030pm, attesting to how good the food is (or he thinks it is).

Their fish head beehoon is a safe bet when im at holland village and dont feel like having the usual crystal jade/ amici/ walas fare. It's not the best (imo), but its good enough to make me return for more.

Tomoe London was recommended by my Japanese hairdresser. Thankfully, the restaurant this time did not disappoint. However, it failed to shine as well. The sushi and sashimi slices were fresh and pretty good, with not too much rice in it. The other dishes were not bad as well, but none succeeded in really impressing me. My favourite sushi roll was the spicy tuna! I love tuna:) The fatty tuna nigiri was pretty good as well. Only miss of the day was the Sake Sorbet, which was gained unanimous disapproval from everyone. For a dessert, we were expecting something sweet but instead it tasted just like its name, Sake. It tasted like frozen Sake to be honest. The prices were a little bit pricey for a small restaurant like this and they seemed to have a weird penchant for unagi in their dishes. I thought the dragon roll would have prawn tempura in it, but turned out to be unagi instead. I don't like unagi:S So next one on my list of Japanese restaurants to try would be Cafe Japan.

Having heard rave reviews from my friend Joseph as well as reading online reviews, I decided to check out this restaurant at Bayswater. After hearing that this place had roast duck that was better than that of Four Seasons, I was pretty sceptical about it. How right I was. :(

Being a huge fan of roast duck, I can devour a whole bird and 2 cups of rice in one sitting. :) However, this roast duck sorely lacked the taste to whet my appetite to such an extent. For a chinese restaurant, the dishes seemed to sorely lack in sodium. Amazing eh?

The roast duck seemed to be lacking any taste of sort. It was neither salty nor sweet (as per Four Seasons/Gold Mine). The only thing that they had in common was the same fattiness. The gravy had the same look and appearance as the the other restaurants, but it was extremely plain to say the least. I was really disappointed with my roast duck dinner tonight, and I actually contemplated buying back some of the real stuff from Four Seasons, but alas I was too full.

The only saving grace was the Siew Yoke though. It was crispy and salty, definitely providing a good contrast to the tasteless roast duck that I just had. For £8.50, the portion served for the deep fried squid was very small and as per Kam Tong style, it lacked salt as well. Lastly, the mixed vegetable curry is a very westernised version of the dish I'm used to back home (sayur lodeh) and please do not order it!:)

By the way, I gotta sort out my bad habit of starting to eat before taking pictures. An eager beaver does not make a good foodie.:P

Sorry for the lack of posts recently- I've been busy with work and life, and Siew Mai's been busy with his final exams. His last paper is on Friday, so I suppose more posts will come after that! :)

Steamboat is one of my favourite foods, never mind that its time consuming cuz you have to wait for the food to cook, or that you're paying good money to basically cook your own food. I like how its tummy-warming and filling, and that you usually have it with a group of friends/family (ie bonding time!). I guess it also helps that i love drinking soup!

Look past the slightly cheesy name of this place, and you'll be rewarded with a more-than-decent steamboat option. Its an ala-carte buffet, so items are fresh (meats and fish are sliced on the spot for you).

There are 4 or 5 stock bases including chicken stock, fish head and scallop broth, tom yum soup and mala soup. As ome member of our party doesnt take spicy stuff, we opted for the first 2 soup bases. Both were satisfactorily tasty and didnt leave any msg aftertaste :)

One thing i like about this place is that they have stuff like fried yam, pumpkin, fish glue, and even fried rice. Very few other steamboat buffet places have such options- i love dunking a piece of crispy fried yam in the soup and watching it soak in and absorb the tastiness of the soup till the yam is nice and soft and oh-so-tasty, knowing that its gonna end up in my mouth and belly :)))

Also worthy of mention is their fried rice, which comes free flow with the buffet. Again, you order it off the menu, and I could actually watch the chefs frying it up in the kitchen. No chance of it being pre-fried and placed in a warmer, waiting to be scooped out for unsuspecting customers. I like that there's sufficient wok hei in the dish though it isnt exactly chockful of ingredients. But at least each grain of rice is coated with sufficient egg and is fried to a beautiful golden colour. Tbh, I would even pay for this fried rice if they decided to take it off the ala-carte buffet menu!

This was half-priced dimsum at Ah Yat Seafood Gallery at Turf City. We over-ordered again, of course, but this time it was justified- we'd just been through a tiring session of 4 hrs of wakeboarding and hadn't had anything to eat the entire day!

The items were not bad overall- seafood was reasonably fresh and porridge wasnt too watery. There were also a few innovative items like pumpkin dumplings and deep fried yam with prawns. But what pushed it up a notch further was def the half price promotion! It's applicable from 11am to 2pm 7 days a week. Only downside is the inaccesible location...

Gourmet Burger Kitchen is a popular burger chain in London. They're famous for their wide range and well just famous for their burgers:) Prices range from about £6-£8 for a burger and each table comes with a cute little ketchup bottle as seen in the picture above:P The burgers are pretty good I would say, and sure as hell beats Burger King anyday!

Finally, after being a loyal customer to Four Seasons all this while, I decided to take the leap and try the roast duck at Gold Mine Restaurant. Apparently, the chef of Gold Mine used to work at Four Seasons and decided to set up his own restaurant. I gotta say that the duck tastes exactly the same, and to be honest, I can't really tell the difference between the 2 restaurants. Same fatty duck accompanied with the same delicious sauce. Yummy! We ordered a crab meat tofu as well and a plate of char siew/siew yoke which was pretty decent. However, I was starving and in my hurry to eat I forgot to take a picture of it:S

I'd been reading all the rave reviews for brunch at Riders Cafe, and wanted to try it out for myself. So 5 of us Belgium troopers fixed a brunch date a month in advance (that's what you have to do when your friends work in the legal, banking, media and hotel management industries), and made reservations for for a lazy Saturday brunch. :)

The extremely long drive in. It's impossible to walk in, so u'll either have to drive or catch a cab in.

its non-airconditioned, but there's a constant breeze and lots of fans arnd so it isnt too warm imo.

We also ordered another main- the Riders Breakfast, which consisted of bacon, sausages (or ham, i can't remember which), eggs done any style, potatoes, mushrooms, toast and tomatoes. While it was satiating, it was the least spectacular main of the afternoon.

We also ordered 3 sides- hand-cut fries with paprika, as well as 2 servings of sauteed asparagus (lousy attempt at trying to assuage our guilt)

Death by Chocolate Cake- by the time we were done with our mains and sides, no one could move. BUT the allure of chocolate proved irresistable (or maybe it was my constant wheedling), and we eventually succumbed to greed and ordered this massive chunk of warmed chocolate fudge cake smothered in (what else?) chocolate fudge sauce.

We managed to catch the horses trotting by! Rides Cafe is also famed for allowing customers to enjoy their food amidst much greenery as well as stables.

Having been to Riders Cafe for brunch and Mimolette for dinner, I think Riders Cafe is much more value for money and wallet-friendly than its sister restaurant. Of course, some would argue that that's because they are targetting different crowds and clientele. Overall, though, Riders Cafe gets my vote!

Siew Mai bought me a nice box of Laduree macarons and got my sister's good friend to hand carry it back from London for me! They survived well despite the rough flight, thank goodness. Tasted fresh and yummy, and I felt quite loved and pampered :) I like small sweet gestures- hopefully siew mai does stuff like this more often after his exams heheh. no pressure!

He got me chocolate, coffee, pistachio and salted caramel macarons. 6 of each! salted caramel has been all the rage recently in sg, and rightly so. the contrast btwn the sweetness of the caramel and the saltiness of the butter made biting into each macaron sheer bliss. i have to say, though, that chocolate was by far my favourite flavour (i believe the same goes for siew mai)- told u i'm partal to chocolate! :P

IMO, Laduree beats canele and bakerzin handsdown. You get what you pay for, i guess. I've heard good reviews for TWG macarons though...will give it a try soon since their shop at Repub Plaza is so near my office! :)

We had a dinner at Meza Mediterranean Tapas Lounge & Bar a while back and I managed to dig up some old pictures of it. The food was above average but I guess the best part of this restaurant would be the ambience. Average price per person would be about £40-£50 per head.

Chocolate Macaroons - very, very average. The size of it is slightly larger than that of Laduree, but the quality pales in comparison. At £2.75, I would say these macaroons are pricey given its sub-standard quality.

Chocolate Tart - Nothing fantastic as well. Very average, and after a few bites of it, I kinda got sick of it.

Moelleux Chocolat - Traditional French soft, dark chocolate cake, this was another miss.

Coffee and Chocolate Eclairs - These two were the worse of the lot. To say the least, I really didn't like them at all. The creamy filling inside the eclairs were sour. I'm not sure if they're meant to be sour, but they sure as hell didn't taste good.

After doing some work in school, I headed to a PAUL confectionery at South Kensington to sample some of their pastries since it's supposedly quite popular in the UK. Sadly though, I was greatly disappointed. The prices of their pastries are almost similar to that of Laduree, but yet their quality is nowhere as good. The total bill amounted to £18.50, not a huge sum, but money well wasted I would say.

Although i generally prefer savoury foods to sweet stuff, i'm extremely partial to chocolate. Brownies, chocolate tarts, truffles, chocolate macarons, Krispy Kreme's Chocolate Dreamcake.. heaven!

This is an entire brownie tray from The Brownie Factory, located at the basement of Takashimaya Shopping Centre. While it wasnt as moist and dense as the one from Borough Market, it tasted pretty good once i warmed it up and drizzled some chocolate fudge over it. That being said, I probably wouldnt buy one for myself anytime soon (this was a gift).

Peach Garden is one of my grandma's favourite Chinese restaurants, cuz of the consistently superb food and service. Their jumbo prawns in wasabi mayo sauce with fresh mango is really delish, and my dad loves their siew yoke and roast duck. Come to think of it, should have brought Siew Yoke there when he was back.

Anyway, this was a team lunch to welcome the newcomer to our team. We basically first ordered everything on the dimsum menu to try, then ordered seconds of whatever we liked. Which means that we ended up with lots of food and very happy bellies. I'll just mention the dishes that stood out:

The good- the har gau, siew mai, char siew pau, fried beancurd roll with prawns and congee were all well executed. I'm a har gau fiend (i can eat 2 baskets of har gau on my own), but had to control myself since I was lunching with colleagues :( wish i could have had the entire basket of hargau to myself!) The char siew sou also deserves special mention for being flaky and crumbly without being messy to eat, and the not too sweet filling went down well with me. Nowhere near Wah Lok's standard though- i think their char siew sou is pretty much unsurpassable in Sg :)

The bad- The filling in the custard pau with salted egg yolk was abit too runny and salty for my liking, and I would have preferred whole prawns in the prawn cheong fun rather than small pieces of chopped up prawns held together to resemble a whole prawn. Also, I found their egg tarts a little too sweet and artificial tasting.

As i'm not very fond of pork, I didnt try the xiao long bao or guo tie. However, feedback fr my colleagues on these 2 dishes was good.

The bill for a table of 9 came up to about S$22 each. Pretty reaonable, considering we were all stuffed. Service was good- tea was consistently refilled, plates were changed and staff did not mix our orders up. A plus would be the nice views fr the 33rd floor of OCBC Centre :)

Desserts at Adam Road Food Centre

Teck Kee Desserts at Adam Road Food Centre is my fav stall for local desserts, esp the cheng tng and tau suan! So i dragged my friends down after dinner at Newton Circus FC..

Their cheng tng is really famous cuz the tong shui is not too sweet, and you can really taste the outcome of hours of boiling the dried longans, red dates, winter melon strips and lotus seeds. Like Siew Mai, I can never get enough of gingko nuts, so each time i order cheng tng I'll add an extra portion of gingko nuts (at a dollar more). I think Teck Gee's cheng tng is the only one that can rival the famous cheng tng from Zion Road Food Centre.

The tau suan here is one of the best around simply because it isnt too starchy or watery, its not too sweet or too bland, and the you tiao pieces always taste fresh and not stale. At $1.20, its very reasonably priced too!

Ice kachang with only gula melaka- my parents eat their ice kachang this way and its a habit i've gotten used to. The not-too-sweet gula melaka (brown sugar sauce) topped with cream corn tastes really good...and for me, the best part abt eating ice kachang is digging for 'treasures' beneath the mountain of ice! I love the red beans and chin chow bits... :) i remember causing Siew Mai's red bean ice to collapse once at a HK Cafe cuz i was happily digging for the hidden 'treasures' below...oops.

this is one of my favourite white carrot cakes around- Heng's carrot cake. The kueh is home made so its soft and tasty, and they are extremely generous with the egg and shrimps. Another good white carrot cake worthy of mention would be Chey Sua at Toa PAyoh Lorong 1, while the stalls at Red Hill market and Ghim Moh serve up the best black carrot cakes imo. Lots of garlic, black sauce and cai por and neng.

from all the accolades and newspaper cuttings, the hokkien mee from this stall seems pretty promising doesnt it?

unfortunately, the hokkien mee was way below par. the stock lacked the umami taste, and the noodles were a little too al dente for my liking. apologies for the lousy shot- my friend decided to sneak a bite just as i was taking the picture.

yum! we had 2 such plates...2 with chilli and 2 without. as much as i enjoy having chilli with my food, for some reason i eat my popiahs without. guess i dont want the chilli to interfere with the taste of my fav sweet savoury sauce.

queueing for the famous Bee Heng hokkien popiah took me 10mins. but it was well worth it!

sambal sotong! one of my must-order dishes when eating bbq seafood at hawker centres. not too bad but the best are still the ones at bedok85 and east coast park food centre i think.

pretty meaty grilled sambal stingray, with spicy yet sweet sambal. not bad!

sorry i didnt get a chance to take pics of the kangkong, chicken wings, satay and sugar cane drinks before they were snapped up. but they were all just passable- nothing to write home about.

This was where we sat at the first time we visited newton together- right outside the 24hr bak chor mee stall. I took a pic of it for memories' sake as I was queueing for the popiah. We had come from watching (another) movie, and wanted a heathy supper for once. It feels like such a long time ago, but it actually isnt. His skin was peeling after a day at the beach...hmm happy memories from the past.

I had a huge craving for Laduree Macaroons today, so got 4 of them chocolate ones after class! Like nutella, these macaroons are absolutely delightful and can be described as sex in a box!:) The chocolate filling in the macaroons are absolutely heavenly. £3 each for a large macaroon, kinda on the pricey side but really good.

Had a home cooked meal at my friend's house today. On the menu was some local fare, kinda impressive for my two friends to cook all these dishes and hunt for the necessary ingredients in London.

During Easter back in Singapore, my Dad brought me to Tandoori House (I think...) at Balestier. The food was good and the prices were reasonable as well. The restaurant is located at a little shopping complex opposite the original Boon Tong Kee. I can't really remember the names of the dishes besides the Tandoori Chicken (the obvious one...), but I would recommend anyone with a liking for Indian food to give this restaurant a shot. When we had our dinner there, this place seemed to be pretty popular with the expats (Ang Mohs). Anyway, enjoy the pictures!

There's lots of good food to be found in the Zion Road area, and i'm not just referring to Spize or Boon Tong Kee or 5 Star chicken rice or Tong Shui Cafe.
Besides Sin Hoi Sai along Tong Bahru Road, Siang Hee at Zion Road serves up really good cze char too, at lower prices. Sorry I didnt get to take a pic of the pork ribs or sambal sweet potato leaves- but be assured that all the dishes were well executed and deserving of a return visit :)

This deserves special mention- unlike the usual red bean snows u find at HK cafes, where all you get is a small portion of red bean paste coupled with copious amounts of evaporated milk and ice, this gem consists of really well-shaved ice and generous amounts of thick red bean paste, topped with an equally generous amount of azuki red beans from japan. Red bean overload!! But that's the whole point, isn't it? :)

All for S$2.80. I was very very impressed. Think Siew Mai will enjoy this too- we're both fans of red bean desserts. Will make a mental note to take him there in Nov!

I know it's a dish that's been done to death recently, but it remains one of my fav prawn dishes nonetheless. Deep fried jumbo prawns tossed in wasabi mayo- Sam Leong's creation for Tung Lok, best done by Tung Lok imo. Peach Garden does a mean rendition too though. Oh the version Jing at One Fullerton deserves a mention too- will blog about that meal soon :)

Sizzling Sirloin Beef a.k.a. Weeping Tiger - So good it makes a tiger weep? Okay that was lame:P This dish is very, very popular and unless you don't take beef, you should definitely try this! It's really good!

I was first introduced to this restaurant by my Thai friend after rugby training. Cold, wet and hungry, this restaurant had all the necessary ingredients to perk me up. After patronising it for the first time, I immediately fell in love with the food. This restaurant definitely serves authentic and unpretentious Thai cuisine to say the least, and complimented by its friendly staff as well as speedy preparation of dishes, Addie's is definitely one of my favourites in London.

Okay I know I said that was the last post for today but I'm waiting for my dinner to be done so I might as well blog a bit more right?:) We had a dinner from Mark's and Spencer's when Har Gau came to visit me in London. Although I'm not a huge fan of ready-made meals, Marks and Spencer actually do sell pretty decent ones. Besides that, their desserts are pretty fantastic - namley their Profiteroles, Chocolate Brownie Dessert and their Vanilla and Wild Blueberry Cream Tart! And to top things off, they're really not expensive at all!

Ok here's the long awaited post. These are two of the restaurants that I frequent in Leicester Square - Four Seasons and New Mayflower. Four Seasons is world-renown for its roast duck and it certainly lives up to its reputation. Whenever any of my friends come up to London, they would definitely want to try it. Although the duck is fantastic, the same can't be said for the other dishes that they serve - which are at best mediocre. The ducks in London are generally fatter and not as dry as the ones back home. The sauce that accompanies the duck is the best that I've tried thus far. By the way, this duck is so good I can eat a whole bird by myself!:)))

New Mayflower restaurant serves good seafood at affordable prices. A huge plate of crabs costs only about £17 or so, and I gotta say they're really, really good. I have not tried the other flavours as of yet since I tend to keep ordering the same stuff:P The other dishes are not too bad as well. The two types of crabs that I love are Curry Crabs and Crabs with Spring Onions. You can add either bee hoon or glass noodles with the crabs. Regarding the bee hoon, I would recommend the soft type as the fried bee hoon is deep fried into clumpy chunks - not my cup of tea. The curry crabs are very unique and very rich whereas the Spring Onion Crabs are a little lighter. The crabs served in London are different from the ones in Singapore, but they're pretty tasty too. Fans of crab roe will be in for a treat as there is plenty of roe in these crabs, and they definitely taste better than the ones that we have back in Singapore.

Dim Joy

Tucked away in a quaint shophouse along Neil Road, is Dim Joy, one of the few places in Singapore which serves dimsum even at dinner.

What it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in terms of quality. The menu here sticks to traditional favourites, which will please purists.

High calcium pork rib congee, where the umami taste really came through.

One of the best custard pau with egg yolk I've come across. Custard was not too runny, and the salted egg yolk did not overpower the delicate custard.

Crisp Skin Double Boiled Milk- one of their specialities

Their Lingnan egg tarts, which unfortunately disappeared off all our plates before I could take a picture, were superb. Delicate yet fragrant, crumby yet not too oily.

Definitely worth a visit if you have a craving for dimsum at dinnertime. However, they close by 10pm so it can't be a substitute for the usual supper dimsum haunts in Geylang, even though Dim Joy beats them hands down quality-wise.

Hi guys,

on this food blog you can find pictures of my gastronomic adventures in London and Singapore. This blog will be updated by two authors, my girlfriend Har Gau and Siew Mai (Me). For the uninformed, these are names of popular chinese dim sum.
